Analysis of Extreme Floods in Malaysia

چکیده

This article reviews some of the recent advances in the analysis of extreme flood events in Malaysia. First, a detailed analysis of daily rainfall precipitation measurements leads to new understanding regarding Malaysian monsoons: the conditional probability of rainfall steadily increases as a function of the number of successive rainy days. The probability of multi-day rainfall events has also been analyzed using stochastic models like DARMA(1,1) to demonstrate lower periods of returns of large precipitation amounts for rainfall events between 4-12 days. Advances in numerical modeling of surface runoff using the TREX model allowed improved simulations of large floods when considering rainfall amounts between the 2-yr to 100-yr events and the PMP for extreme floods on both small to large watersheds in Malaysia. Examples on Lui, Semenyih and Kota Tinggi have also been possible with GIS data at 30-90 m resolution. The recent floods of the Kota Tinggi and Muda River are also briefly discussed. Finally, a brief overview of the DID River Management Manual is also presented.

Identification and synoptic analysis of the highest precipitation linked to ARs in Iran

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are long-narrow, concentrated structures of water vapour flux associated with extreme rainfall and floods. Accordingly, the arid and semi-arid regions are more vulnerable to this phenomenon. Therefore, this study identifies and introduces the highest precipitation occurred during the presence of ARs from November to April (2007-2018). The study also attempted to...

Active Distribution Networks Restoration after Extreme Events

After extreme events such as floods, thunderstorms, blizzards and hurricanes there will be devastating effects in the distribution networks which may cause a partial or complete blackout. Then, the major concern for the system operators is to restore the maximum critical loads as soon as possible by available generation units.  In order to solve this problem, this paper provides a restoration s...

تحلیل تأثیر تغییر اقلیم بر بارش‌های حدی حوزه سیل‌برگردان غرب تهران

The impacts of climate Change, more than being influenced by the change in precipitation amount, is affected by the changes imposed by this phenomenon on rainfall regime (intensity and frequency); it means that climate change can cause extensive droughts/floods due to impact on temporal and spatial rainfall distribution, and hence, conducting some studies on return period of extreme rainfalls s...

Study of the flood in Golestan province from a statistical and synoptics point of view (Case study: March 2019)

Flood is one of the most destructive natural phenomena. Every year it brings extensive losses to the country’s financial and human resources. In our country, major parts of Iran’s provinces are always at risk of flooding. The Gorgan and Atrak catchments have also become more important, as several floods have occurred in Golestan province in recent years, causing many deaths and economic losses....

Water-Borne Diseases and Extreme Weather Events in Cambodia: Review of Impacts and Implications of Climate Change

Cambodia is prone to extreme weather events, especially floods, droughts and typhoons. Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of such events. The Cambodian population is highly vulnerable to the impacts of these events due to poverty; malnutrition; agricultural dependence; settlements in flood-prone areas, and public health, governance and technological limitations....
